Every year, Kelley Blue Book releases their list of the Best Green Cars of the year. This year, we’re thrilled to announce that the 2012 Downers Grove Hyundai Elantra made the list for the second year in a row! Earning 40 miles per gallon, it’s not hard for us to see why the Elantra makes the list, and here’s what KBB officials had to say:

“The elusive 40 mpg mark is hit and miss for non-hybrid cars, but for the 2012 Hyundai Elantra it’s an easy target. … The Elantra obtains 40 highway mpg in all trim levels thanks to its fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engine, all while looking good in its wavy sheet metal and offering value with its low entry price.”

At Hyundai we pride ourselves on offering the most fuel efficient cars around and with cars like the Chicago Hyundai Sonata, drivers can always take advantage of fuel saving technology and can save at the pump!  We’re also committed to keeping drivers informed and so Hyundai recently released both its sales-weighted Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) results and its average window-label fuel economy results. This makes us the first automaker to disclose either of these important fuel economy data points. Read on to learn more!

John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America’s president and CEO, spoke out saying:

“At the beginning of the year, we began reporting monthly sales-weighted Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) results, to allow journalist, policy-makers, and consumers the ability to judge our progress against the evolving CAFE standards. … Now, we are going one step further and sharing average window-label fuel economy results, so stakeholders can better understand the very real difference between these two metrics.”

Here’s a look at the numbers:

SALES WEIGHTED FUEL ECONOMY

Unsure what the difference is between CAFE mpg and Window-label mpg?

• CAFE fuel economy is based on data from fuel economy tests and does not include adjustments taken to reflect real-world driving conditions. These numbers are used to set federal standards.
• Average window-label fuel economy on the other hand is what is shown on the vehicle window sticker. It is calculated by taking data from fuel economy tests and applying adjustments which results in ratings that more accurately reflect what drivers will get in real-world driving.

From here on out, Hyundai will provide both sets of data to help drivers and policy makers alike understand the significant differences between CAFE standard fuel economy values and real-world fuel economy values.

Krafcik says there’s one important thing to remember:

“CAFE values, since they are unadjusted for real-world driving conditions, are more than 30 percent higher than the real-world adjusted fuel economy values shown on new car window stickers. … It’s important to continue to make this point so the dialogue around fuel economy standards, which are based on CAFE values and not real-world values, can be put into the appropriate context.”

What’s the SEMA Show?

For those that may be less or unfamiliar with the SEMA show, it is the largest annual automotive specialty-equipment show on the planet. It is held in Las Vegas, and we get excited about it every year (and not just because we love the buffets in Vegas)! This year is no exception thanks to the models we’re expecting from Hyundai!

What should you look for from Hyundai?

This year, we are proud to announce that Hyundai will be bring the 2012 ARK Performance Hyundai Veloster to the SEMA Show. This is an incredible model that we think you’ll really love! Here’s a few things you should know about it.

• It is designed to bridge the gap between an affordable sports car and an extreme motorsports vehicle. What doesn’t love the sound of that?
• It will be powered by a 1.6-liter GDI inline-4 engine which features a custom twin-scroll turbocharger boost. This bumps output from 138 to 210 horsepower!
• Other performance upgrades include an ARK GRIP dual exhaust, ARK Six-Pot Big Brake Kit and ARK custom oil cooler.
• Visually, this car will really stand out! It will feature a bright green and flat gray paint job, as well as an ARK SFX rear wing mount, OneEighty custom exterior lights and ARK CFX Designs grille.
• The interior won’t disappoint either. The cabin gets JPM Coachworks custom seats, shift boot, dashboard and headliner, along with Image Dynamics Q450.4 amplifiers and ARK racing pedals. A Jason Noren Fabrications custom rally cage and Adam Perry custom audio setup round out the package.

In the all-new 2011/2012 Compact Sedan Comparison Test conducted by Kelley Blue Book (KBB), the Chicago Hyundai Elantra tied for first! The experts at kbb.com gave each model an overall rating as well as specific ratings based on interior, exterior, performance, comfort/convenience and value. The Elantra scored 7.5 out of 10 possible points in the overall ratings!

The experts at kbb.com had this to say about the winners:

“When the 2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited sedan showed up for our test, it arrived as a gut-shot to the entire compact sedan class. It started with the all-new Elantra shape, a small-sedan variation of the look that we already love on the Genesis and Sonata. It continued with a leather-lined, feature-filled interior that would have been considered excessive in a car from the next class up. … At $22,830, the Hyundai Elantra Limited was the least expensive compact sedan in our quartet.”

As part of the tour, the Tucson will travel more than 4,500 miles coast to coast for kids with cancer. The tour launched in San Francisco on September 1 and just visited Chicago earlier this month.

The purpose of the Hyundai Drive 4 Hope is twofold:

1. Demonstrate the environmental advantages and performance of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs)
2. Benefit kids with cancer

Among the advantages of the Hyundai Tucson FCEV are the fact that it utilizes fuel cell power from compressed hydrogen, an energy source that is not only renewable but far safer than gasoline. The FCEV Tucson performs about the same as a vehicle on gasoline.

J.D. Power APEAL study

The APEAL (standing for Automotive Performance, Execution And Layout) study looks at cars and what is right with them. More specifically, the study examines how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive. The 2011 APEAL Study is based on owner evaluations of more than 90 vehicle attributes, and complements the recently released J.D. Power and Associates 2011 US Initial Quality StudySM (IQS), which focuses on problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days of ownership.

The APEAL Study measures owner satisfaction in 10 categories:

The Hyundai Equus achieves the highest score of any “all-new” model with 904 points in the 2011 APEAL Study. The Equus is the highest-performing model in the industry and the only model that scores above 900 in APEAL this year.

Hyundai as a brand scored 793 and was driven by a strong performance from the redesigned Sonata and the all-new Equus. This score helped Hyundai to improve its nameplate score from last year’s by 33 points, moving it up 13 rank positions to 15th overall.
