Welcome to the future, where the new 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid Electric powertrain joins the ranks of gas-powered V8s on Ward’s Auto magazine’s 10 Best Engines of 2016. This is Hyundai’s fifth award from Ward’s, but the first for a plug-in hybrid powertrain. In fact, it is the first time such a powertrain has ever made the list, which is what makes this award such a huge success story for Hyundai.
The plug-in hybrid electric engine has been honored for its refinement, fuel efficiency, and the seamless way it transitions from all-electric mode to hybrid mode, making it a successful iteration of Hyundai’s move toward a ‘best of both worlds’ power source.
The 2016 Sonata Plug-in Hybrid model has a 2.0L four-cylinder 154 horsepower engine paired with a 50 kW electric motor for a total of 202 horsepower. The combination of direct injection in the gasoline engine and polymer gel in the battery discharges slower than the typical nickel-metal hydride batteries gives the new green Sonata up to 99 mpg.
The original 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid model, powered with the same engine and a 38 kW motor for 44 mpg on the highway, is available to the Downers Grove, IL area through Pugi Hyundai. Drivers interested in owning the hybrid Sonata should contact our dealership at 877-885-5942.
